ABOUT THE FIRM:
Multnomah Defenders, Inc. (MDI) is a non-profit public interest law firm established in 1982. MDI lawyers and staff defend adults and juveniles in the courts of Oregon in criminal, juvenile, contempt and appellate matters. Our mission is to provide high quality legal representation to our clients and to treat every client with dignity and respect.
This position would be working out of our Eastside Office, specifically for MDI’s Juvenile Law Section. The case load includes juvenile dependency, termination of parental rights, among other matters.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
Legal Assistants are a key department of MDI. They support MDI attorneys, maintain case files, and engage with clients. Each Legal Assistant directly assists 2 attorneys, while being available for additional coverage as needed. Law office experience helpful, but not required, to join our team. Clear communication, flexibility, and effective prioritization are key skills necessary to succeed in this position.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Opening, updating, and closing case files, and maintaining up to date computer records.
Redacting documents and handling sensitive communications.
Answering in-person and telephone inquiries from clients, as well as various court and agency personnel.
Assisting clients, witnesses, and clients’ family members by telephone concerning case status and appearances.
Other duties as assigned. Legal Assistants may occasionally take on administrative support tasks: such as answering the reception phones, court deliveries, and generally helping with the logistics of a busy nonprofit office.
DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Highly organized with the ability to learn new systems.
Conversational Spanish speaking ability a plus.
Professional communication skills, calm phone demeanor, team-minded approach.
Basic knowledge of office telephones, copiers/printers, scanners. Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows computers. Ability to learn new interfaces.
Flexibility, strong multitasking skills, attention to detail.
Experience working with people under stress, and a commitment to indigent defense.
Experience in Time Matters or other case management software a plus.
